Mine X (and Reddit) for Customer Pain Points

Answer first: Ask Grok Bot to run 3–4 targeted public X searches with complaint words ("wish", "annoying", "frustrating", "why can't") plus your product or category, then cluster the results into recurring pains with example post links. Run it weekly as a routine to watch the themes change.

Test status: tested on 2026-10-16. The public X search "grok bot" (annoying OR wish OR frustrating) -is:retweet lang:en (relevancy sort, 10 results) returned 10 real posts. They clustered clearly into usage/credit limits running out, subscription/plan confusion and outages, with one or two feature wishes such as syncing projects from Grok web. The call used 1 of the 30 per-minute reads. Reddit's public JSON did not come back as usable data from the box, so treat Reddit as best effort.

Who it's for

Product managers, founders and marketers who want real voice-of-customer language for roadmaps and copy.

Steps

  1. Pick the subject: your product, a competitor, or a category ("budget app").
  2. Use complaint operators. A good pattern is "<term>" (wish OR annoying OR frustrating OR "why can't") -is:retweet lang:en.
  3. Run 3–4 narrow searches. Each returns up to 25 posts, so narrow searches beat one broad one.
  4. Have it cluster the posts and quote short snippets with links so you can check them.

Copy-paste prompt

Search public X for pain points about "<PRODUCT/CATEGORY>". Run these searches (relevancy, 25 results each):
1) "<TERM>" (wish OR "why can't") -is:retweet lang:en
2) "<TERM>" (annoying OR frustrating OR broken) -is:retweet lang:en
3) "<COMPETITOR>" (switched OR cancel OR alternative) -is:retweet lang:en
Ignore spam, ads and off-topic replies. Cluster into the top 5 recurring pains.
For each: name, how many posts, 2 short quotes with links, and one product/copy idea.
List how many X reads you used.

Expected result

A ranked list of about 5 pain themes, each with a count, linked quotes and an idea. In our test, 10 posts were enough to surface 3 clear themes.

Gotchas

  • Noise is real. Our test results included an off-topic shopping reply and a post about a different agent. Tell it to drop those.
  • Small samples exaggerate whatever is loudest. Count posts before you trust a theme.
  • Limits: 30 reads per minute, 1,000 per day. A weekly 4-search run is trivial.
  • Reading only. It doesn't reply to or DM anyone.
